VICTORIAN VIRTUAL REALITY. WATTS GALLERY RESIDENCY.
I am excited to announce I will be undertaking a two week residency at the watts gallery working with brian May’s collection of stereoscopic imagery.
The residency will be undertaken for two weeks in september 2023. I am particularly interested in stereoscopy and have previously produced digital works that generate the same effect.
The cost of photographic techniques has traditionally resulted in mostly white middle-class stories and environments represented. For this reason I will be looking to produce contemporary photographs, aiming to work predominantly with under-represented groups, to reimagine these scenes and techniques with a contemporary lens.
I will be exploring the representation of illness and disability, parts of society that were hidden within Victorian English society, reflecting on how attitudes have changed, but in many ways remained influenced by this narrative.
The research will take the form of photography, digital imagery and additional contemporary methods, including Generative AI explorations. there are clear connections to the public reception of AI and the invention of photography as entertainment, both of with were viewed with fascination and fear of unknown alchemy.
